Precious OpalWayne Goss Precious Opal Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a very fine pearl throughout–it almost looked matte from a distance but had a bit of extra oomph. The texture felt smooth and a bit creamier than other shades in the formula–more like a cross between modern pencils (waxier, more silicone-heavy, like Urban Decay’s pencil eyeliners) and old school pencils (firmer, sharper). It had nearly opaque coverage in a single stroke, which deposited color evenly as I worked it against my lower lash line. It wore decently for six hours on my lower lash line but was almost faded to nothing after nine hours of wear. Formula Overview$14.00/0.04 oz. - $350.00 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to have a "fine tip" while still being able to "glide over skin with a cream-to-silk feel" that doesn't scratch, tug, or skip and can be used to line the eyes, as an "all-over base," or smudged along the lash line or applied to the waterline. It's a sharper pencil, which is a more "old school" formula compared to softer, more rounded pencils that tend to feel waxier (often containing more silicone for glide and slip). For those who like more precise, thin lines but prefer a pencil format, this type of formula is better for that. They also seemed to have more depth in the actual colors and were definitely less prone to tugging/feeling sharp compared to some I've tried in the past. They were harder for me to use on my waterline, because the sharpness of the pencil did cause my waterline to water. They had four to six hours of wear on my water line and six to seven hour wear on my lower lash line, but they were quicker to fade and two shades were barely visible after nine hours of wear. The formula yielded good coverage in a single stroke and was buildable or mostly opaque when applied with shorter, more overlapping strokes (which is really more how I apply eyeliner). Rich HazelWayne Goss Rich Hazel Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff that adhered fairly evenly in a single layer but was best built up with a second layer. The texture was firmer but mostly smooth without being uncomfortable to work with on my lower lash line, though it was less comfortable on my water line. The eyeliner lasted decently for six and a half hours on my lower lash line before fading noticeably (five hours on my waterline), but there was very little left after nine hours of wear (like from a normal viewing distance, you wouldn’t know I was wearing eyeliner). ObsidianWayne Goss Obsidian Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep, true black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque coverage in a single layer (and could be built up to mostly opaque coverage) at a comfortable pressure; I felt like to get opaque coverage, it was a bit too firm to do so comfortably (it made my waterline water at a lighter pressure). The pencil glided smoothly across my lower lash line without tugging, but it wasn’t as comfortable to use on my waterline, though it deposited color evenly. It had faded quite noticeably, though with minimal build up into the inner/outer corners, by seven hours on my lower lash line (nothing was on my waterline after six hours) and was barely visible after nine hours of wear. There are three shimmery shades, one sparkly shade, and two matte shades. It’s a warmer-toned neutral palette with a cooler-toned black. I’ve always maintained that you never know when someone is in the market for the perfect [insert color story here] palette so what’s boring to one is exciting to another… and as long as it’s high quality, I’m happy to have more variety. The palette was decent, but it wasn’t as blendable or as foolproof to work with as marketed, and as there are a ton of warm neutral palettes available, there are so many others I’d reach for over this. I’m a fan of the brand’s brushes, and I think the brand did a great job of bringing Japanese brushes into the more mainstream with a more streamlined range of accessible shapes/sizes at a decent price point, so I definitely wasn’t expecting to be left disappointed with this release. I was expecting really soft, smooth, and blendable eyeshadows with more ethereal shimmers–seamless, almost melted for a luminous sheen–and foolproof, ultra-blendable matte shades–and those were my takeaways from the description at the point of sale as well as the announcement video. The first two shimmers felt almost spongy–soft–but they were more frosted than seamless as anticipated based on the brand’s marketing. The matte shades could have been more blendable, while the sparkly shade had a fair amount of fallout (even when used with a fingertip). One of the shimmers was a bit thinner and sheerer, so it was harder to build up. They lasted decently on my eye (about eight hours). The shades, except the black shade, coordinated well together, but the first and sixth shade are very similar in color (different in finish), and the palette would be more versatile if they overlapped less. The palette contains larger-than-average quantities of each shade (almost 0.10 oz. whereas most eyeshadows are 0.05 oz. when sold individually or 0.03 to 0.04 oz. in a larger palette). The reasoning given for this was because smaller eyeshadows are harder to get one’s brush in, but I’ve not had that issue with most eyeshadow pans in the 0.03 oz. (Urban Decay Naked palette pans for reference) to 0.05 oz. size (that’s a MAC or Urban Decay single eyeshadow for reference). I think when you get to more dime-sized shades it can be a problem if they’re placed close together. The second reasoning was this way you won’t see an “ugly well” or see the pan that emerges from repeated use of the product, which was a head-scratcher. Most of us are purchasing makeup to actually use it, and makeup is a consumable item–there is a shelf life!–and the industry has made some movements into going mini and travel-sized to drop prices. Nevertheless, if you do use these eyeshadows daily, why would you… not get a dip or a well or eventually see pan? It does not go on forever! Per the brand, every palette in the future will contain the same black eyeshadow. I think this made for an interesting discussion (we had one on the Temptalia Discord when it was announced earlier, and I’ve seen it discussed by readers here as well as on my social media platforms). A great matte, black eyeshadow is a great tool to have in the arsenal, but I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to finish a single eyeshadow… but it takes some dedication. It still took me over a year to get through a single eyeshadow that was only 0.05 oz. that I used to fill in my brows almost daily. If the format had more shades, I could see the inclusion of a standard black eyeshadow making more sense, but I think in a palette of six, the black eyeshadow adds a lot of contrast in undertone and depth that actually makes it harder to incorporate it and keep the look warmer and browner as the other five shades suggest. It would have made a lot more sense to include a deeper shade in each color story but to coordinate it with the other shades; in this palette, a really deep red-brown or almost burgundy could have gone a long way. Alternatively, the black eyeshadow could be the seventh shade arranged in a long, narrow pan that went along the right edge (spanning two shades), which would lend itself to lining (which is one technique advocated) as well as building up or darkening shades (where you’d likely use smaller, more precise brushes). Guerlain did something like this previously. I’ll also say that it’s just a so-so black eyeshadow for something that is mega-sized and intended to be included in every palette. I liked that it wasn’t powdery–it was firmer and thinner compared to the other matte shades in the palette–so there wasn’t fallout to worry about, and it was easier to pick up less to build up. The issue was that it wasn’t very blendable, and the shade skipped when applied. It was a lot easier to layer the matte brown eyeshadow over the black to get a softer, more diffused edge. Also, I noted that the brand stated these should not be used wet–you don’t normally see that warning/recommendation, so I thought I’d pass that along! Top Dupes
IngredientsImperial Topaz #1Imperial Topaz #1 is a light, peachy gold with strong, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single layer with a soft, almost spongy texture–there was a bit of spring to it but no creaminess like a true cream eyeshadow–that picked up well with a dry brush and had good adherence to bare skin. I didn’t have any issues diffusing or blending it out, though it seemed to have a slightly whiter base that came through as I applied it. This shade lasted well for eight hours before fading noticeably. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
Formula Overview- The eyeshadow formula is supposed to "blend with the lightest touch--no special techniques needed" that have a "silky feel." The brand recommended that the eyeshadow formula be used "dry only" and the sparkly shades be "patted onto the lid with your finger." In the point of sale description, there was nothing that mentioned pigmentation, but all promotional swatches show really intense coverage (almost running deeper, too, than they appear in pans). There aren't too many shades released at this time, but the performance depended on the finish. I had good luck with two shimmer shades--pigmented, blendable, long-wearing--while one was drier, sheerer, and harder to build up. The matte black eyeshadow (which the brand said would be included in each palette going forward) was stiffer and drier, which made it harder to blend out, while the other matte eyeshadow available was more blendable but definitely not blended with "the lightest touch." The mattes lasted around eight hours on me on average. Browse all of our Wayne Goss Luxury Eyeshadow swatches. Quick Shop: BeautylishImperial Topaz #2Imperial Topaz #2 is a light-medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a frosted finish. The consistency was soft, blendable, and had a slight spring to it (like #1) that felt finely-milled without being powdery nor too firmly packed into the pan. It had opaque color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin. The color stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading visibly. Quick Shop: BeautylishImperial Topaz #3Imperial Topaz #3 is a deep black with cool undertones and a matte finish. It was drier, thinner, and stiff to work with, which made blending more challenging, and the last thing I expected was a fussy formula given that this is a shade the brand said would be included in every palette they ever release. It had medium to semi-opaque coverage in one layer and could be built up to full coverage with two to three layers. It emphasized my skin texture when worn on its own, and I found I had to re-apply and layer the lighter matte brown shades (#5) over it to really get a soft, diffused edge and minimize the ragged appearance of the edge where it was applied. There was visible fading after seven and a half hours of wear. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes

Quick Shop: BeautylishImperial Topaz #4Imperial Topaz #4 is a medium, coppery orange with strong, warm undertones and soft shimmer running through it. It had more of a satin finish in the base color, but there were larger shimmers that had light fallout during application. It had more semi-sheer to medium coverage applied as it was prone to sheering out. The texture was soft but not as finely-milled as the first two shimmer shades (and this one didn’t feel springy to the touch either). It showed signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear. Quick Shop: BeautylishImperial Topaz #5Imperial Topaz #5 is a light-medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out fairly well. I noticed that it was more prone to darkening a bit, so I would recommend wearing it over a primer or powdered base; it became less blendable if there was any natural oil/tackiness present but was fairly blendable overall. It wore decently for eight hours on me before fading noticeably. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes

Quick Shop: BeautylishImperial Topaz #6Imperial Topaz #6 is a light peach with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling finish. The texture was moderately dense, not too thick or too thin, but it wasn’t as emollient as it could have been, which resulted in more fallout during application. It seemed to have more semi-opaque coverage, but the base blended in more with my skin tone, so it may be harder to determine from the swatch without me saying as much. Per the brand, it is best applied with fingertips, but there was still some fallout when I did so. I’d normally recommend to use it with a dampened brush, but the description said to use the eyeshadows dry only. The effect was sparkling with a bit of a sheen, but there was additional fallout over time, so the effect dimmed as the fallout occurred. The longevity seemed around seven hours or so with visible fallout. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes

The texture was lightweight, thin and spreadable without being tacky or clingy. It had sheer color coverage in a single layer, which was as described by the brand, and the color applied well without streaking, though a bit of product settled into my deeper lip lines. The settling wasn’t noticeable in person, but it was the “worst” of the four shades initially released. The gloss lasted for an hour and a half but was moisturizing while worn. Formula Overview$8.00/0.16 oz. - $50.00 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to have a "sheer kiss of colour" that is "nourishing" and "lightweight." It's a creamy, smooth balm-like gloss with moderate shine that is comfortable to apply and to wear. It did have sheer coverage that applied fairly evenly with little to no settling into my lip lines (better than most glosses!). They were hydrating while worn, but they only lasted two hours or less on me, which wasn't unexpected based on the texture (no tackiness and thinner than a longer-wearing lip balm). Playa VistaColour Pop Playa Vista Lux Lip Oil ($8.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a darker peach with warm undertones and a jelly-like finish–translucent but shiny. It had sheer pigmentation in a single layer, which was as described by the brand, but there’s a good chance the color will look quite different from person to person (and it didn’t look that different from Hot Shot in the line). The consistency was smooth, like a gel-like balm without any tackiness, and it was comfortable to wear and smoothed out a lot of my lip lines. It stayed on well for two hours and was hydrating over time. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
BengalColour Pop Bengal Lux Lip Oil ($8.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a medium, pink-coral with moderate, warm undertones and a jelly-like finish–slightly cream-like but translucent and shiny. It delivered sheer coverage as promised, which went on evenly and smoothly across my lips without emphasizing my lip lines; it seemed to smooth some of them out, actually. The texture was lightweight, like a creamy balm, and was comfortable to apply and to wear. The only downside to the formula was it wasn’t particularly long-wearing and would need to be reapplied every two hours or so, though it was moderately hydrating. It had good color coverage in a single layer, but it was the driest shade in the release of four–even after working away the top layer. It was almost putty-like initially, and while normally, I find the warmth of a fingertip aids in application… this formula merely laughed at my foolishness. Trying to apply this shade with fingertips yielded more product on my fingertip and large patches where product had lifted away because it was both tackier while being dry and clingy. A flat, synthetic brush was better at getting product onto my skin initially, but there was some separation along my crease and finer lines. A fluffy, synthetic brush was better at dispersing the product while laying it down, which made it faster to apply so there was less visible patchiness. Unfortunately, I couldn’t smooth out or find a way around the product getting into my creases/separating along them–it was a lot like a liquid lipstick that “cracks” after it dries down. The product had faded noticeably after six hours of wear on my lid and lasted closer to eight hours on the area above my crease/on my brow bone. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
Formula Overview$8.00/0.13 oz. - $61.54 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to be a "primer and shadow in one" that is long-wearing, "crease-proof and water-resistant" that can be used to "even out lid color" or worn "alone for a minimal look" or used under eyeshadow to "intensify color and extend wear." Per the brand, it can be applied with either fingertips or a "larger shade brush." These were a true struggle to work with. I spent one day just trying to find the right way to apply the cream eyeshadows that didn't look like I hadn't had a drop of hydration in 40 years--they made my lids look shriveled, flaky, and emphasized texture I didn't know was there. I had to give up and try again the next day so I didn't abuse my lids beyond repair. The next day, I applied them with the "best" method I could figure out and was astonished by how poorly they wore. The brand's Super Shock Shadows, which is a cream-to-powder formula, wear like iron for me; they typically go on just beautifully and last 10 hours without creasing or fading. This is one of the worst cream eyeshadow formulas I've tried and is one of the few soul-crushing disappointments I've experienced from the brand since its inception. These alternated between sort of drier, stiffer and lightly creamy; the top layer seemed to dry quite quickly--three of the four shades arrived with a drier top layer that became creamier after a second swatch. However, when I went to use them for application and testing on the eyes, that top layer felt a bit drier each time. The formula is fairly quick-drying, though it remained a bit tacky where my lid peeled away from the area above my crease. There was almost no play time at all; I think using fingertips was the absolute worst way to apply these as fingertip application yielded a faster-drying product that applied unevenly, lifted away as it dried down, and almost immediately gathered into creases and accentuated every fine line and bit of texture on my lid without fail. I also felt my fingertips stick a bit with a slight sensation of my lid coming off of my eyeball as I tried to diffuse the product. A flat brush led to marginal improvement; a flat brush delivered more even coverage, but typically a thicker layer, and this is where I noticed more tackiness and where I had the issue of my skin sticking together, which created bald patches where the color stuck and lifted away onto a different part of my eye (e.g. from my lid to above my crease). A fluffy brush was the best tool to use in my experience as it provided a thinner, more even layer of product while simultaneously buffing/diffusing it out, but if you don't blend it out right immediately, there's no forgiveness at all. The product has no ability to endure much blending, rubbing, or faffing or else it flakes off--an accidental rub of the eye will result in an entire bald patch to contend with. It did not take much to flake it all away. I do not recommend layering or building up, and I certainly don't recommend blending two shades together as trying to blend them together resulted in one taking away the other and leaving behind no product at all in the area. I could not keep it from getting into fine lines regardless of the tool I used, and I tried to leave my lid closed for two minutes to let it set more but that did not help. I tried using powder eyeshadow on top, and I felt like most shades "ate" a lot of the color from more matte eyeshadows, so whatever was layered on top looked drier, uneven, and faded. With shimmery eyeshadows, they seemed to apply better but had a more frosted, textured look that wasn't as smooth or as shiny as when worn over bare skin or over a traditional primer. The formula didn't last well on my lids; the lighter shades had started to fade within five hours of wear and two were almost gone within eight hours. They were less prone to fading above the crease area on me (like the brow bone) and there was a decent amount of color still present after eight hours. MoonbeamColour Pop Moonbeam Crème Shadow ($8.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a flat, matte finish. This shade had a creamier feel initially than other shades when I first tried it, but subsequent uses revealed that it had a similar tendency to be firmer and drier on the surface and slightly creamier beneath it after each use. The formula was more challenging to work with, but this was one of the “better” shades, though not by much and not something I’d want to test out again. It had opaque color coverage and applied decently with a flat, synthetic brush but separated along fine lines and caught on texture, especially as it dried down or if I attempted to layer anything over it. The product started to flake away and leave behind bald patches in its wake. I still wouldn’t bother with fingertips as the formula dried down too quickly and wasn’t blendable or spreadable almost immediately after the product was applied to my skin when I used my fingers. If I attempted to blend/spread, the product lifted away entirely. A fluffy brush remained the best tool to get more even, diffused edges without risking total patchiness to get there. The dry down was quick, so you’ll want to work very quickly and go for more minimal blending. It did not seem to apply better as a thin layer; I had a bit less noticeable creasing with a thinner layer but more patchiness, whereas a more medium layer (not heavy! but more opaque) had less patchiness but pulled away fine lines/creases and clung to texture (that I honestly couldn’t see in person… and wasn’t there when I applied another cream eyeshadow later on to check if it was really just a nightmare). This one lasted longer than other shades; the creasing didn’t seem to worsen until after seven hours of wear and started to fade noticeably after eight hours of wear. It was flaking to begin with, though, and there was some additional flaking over time. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
