Iconic IlluminationPat McGrath Iconic Illumination Blitz Astral Eyeshadow Quad ($65.00 for 0.2 oz.) is a new, limited edition foursome that features four warmer-toned shades across sparkling and metallic finishes. All of the shades performed in line with expectations with only Astral Gold Allure being a bit less pigmented than otherwise indicated by the brand (more pigmented than some Astral shades have been, though). The other three shades were very pigmented and worked well dry as well as wet; those also had a slightly creamier, denser (but not heavy or thick) feel to them, which did feel creamier than past shades I’ve seen in the same finishes. For more insight into the finishes, check out my post here.

Astral Gold AllureAstral Gold Allure is a light-medium gold with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had a twinkling, high-shine–almost wet-looking–effect on my skin. It had semi-opaque pigmentation applied dry with a brush or opaque coverage applied with a fingertip or a dampened brush (you can see how the coverage is higher than it looks at a glance based on the angled swatch). I preferred a dampened brush myself as I felt it yielded high coverage, minimized fallout, and ensured that the most sparkle transferred to my lid (rather than some getting stuck to my fingertip). I didn’t see any note to use this shade with fingertips (over brushes) in the “how to” instructions, so it wasn’t noted as being sheer or buildable. I thought it had a fair amount of coverage on its own and could be built up (even dry with minimal fallout), but it could definitely be used to layer over another shade to add sparkle, too. It wore well for nine hours with slight fallout over time. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described. The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base. The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours. Blitz BordeauxBlitz Bordeaux is a deep, muted red with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. There was the smattering of pink and gold micro-sparkle scattered throughout/ It had opaque pigmentation applied dry as well as wet, though application with a dampened brush (which is the suggested usage, but it didn’t indicate its relation to coverage) gave it a slightly shinier finish with a touch more depth. The consistency was smooth to the touch, but it seemed to be a little more like a cream-powder after the initial use. It had excellent adhesion to bare skin and blended out seamlessly. The color lasted well for nine and a half hours before fading a bit. Top Dupes

Blitz BrownBlitz Brown is a deep, chocolaty bronze with subtle, warm undertones and a strong, pearly sheen. The color coverage was opaque in a single layer, regardless of whether it was applied with a dry or dampened brush. I didn’t feel like it was better or worse based on application method, so it was very easy to work with. The texture was smooth, blendable, and picked up well with a brush, though it felt more cream-like compared to past Blitz finish shades the brand has released. It stayed on nicely for nine and a half hours before fading noticeably on me. Top Dupes

Bronze Gold 003Bronze Gold 003 is a bright, rich copper with strong, warm undertones and an intense, metallic finish. The eyeshadow had a smooth, almost cream-like texture that felt soft, yielding, and melted against my lid when applied. It had a bit more slip (but not in a silicone way… really more like a cream-powder that was 70% powder) compared to some other shades in this finish family. The pigmentation was opaque in one pass, which adhered evenly on my lid and wore well for nine and a half hours before creasing faintly. Top Dupes

Warm UpClinique Warm Up Cheek Pop Palette ($29.50 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, limited edition trio of blushes with warmer undertones. The three shades performed consistently with the Cheek Pop formula: denser, firmer textures that work better with moderately dense brushes, but then they go on effortlessly, blend seamlessly, and have a skin-like finish that sits well on skin.

Blush PopBlush Pop is a light-medium pink with soft, warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had buildable coverage from semi-opaque to opaque. The texture felt smooth to the touch, dense and a bit firmer, so it would work best with a denser brush. There was no powderiness, and the powder applied evenly and blended out seamlessly for a skin-like finish. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading slightly. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$21.00/0.12 oz. - $175.00 Per Ounce The formula is described as “vibrant yet natural-looking cheek colour that looks virtually powderless.” The texture was smooth, soft, and dense, so it was never powdery in the pan or on the skin. The blush had good color payoff that was easily sheered out (or you could apply less, as the denser texture makes that easy to control). It’s the kind of texture that almost blends itself as soon as you start applying and working it onto the skin. The finish became more luminous as I blended the powder onto the skin, but it was never shiny or overly shimmery, so it always looked smooth on my skin and did not emphasize pores or my skin’s texture. Most shades lasted between eight and nine hours on me. Browse all of our Clinique Cheek Pop Blush swatches. Sorbet PopSorbet Pop is a very light peach with strong, warm orange undertones and a luminous finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was denser, firmer in the pan but smooth and never powdery. With this type of formula, I’d recommend using a moderately dense, more flat/dome-shaped brush, to pick up product, but the product goes on beautifully on skin–even, smooth coverage that almost blends itself. The color lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before showing signs of wear. Top Dupes

Cola PopCola Pop is a rich, reddened plum with subtle, warm undertones and a natural sheen. It was richly pigmented–it’s one of the deepest-hued shades in the Cheek Pop formula, and it is part of the permanent range–but the denser texture made it easy to pick up less product if desired. The powder was smooth to the touch, firm without being stiff or difficult to work with, as the product applied well to bare skin and blended out with little effort. It stayed on nicely for nine hours on me before I noticed any fading. Top Dupes

I would love to see an extension of the singles range, though, as a lot of the shades released in the various palettes (both limited edition and permanent) are exclusive to those palettes, even though you can pop them out of them. — Christine via Temptalia https://ift.tt/2n948TZ Too Faced Gingerbread Extra Spicy Palette ($49.00 for 0.43 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that’s a follow-up to last year’s Gingerbread Spice palette. Hourglass’ Confession lipsticks are some of the most expensive (by the ounce) on the market, and while Hourglass is not a brand known for their value-packed holiday offerings, this duo is. Normally, a full-sized lipstick (with holder) retails for $36, while a refill-only retails for $22, so there’s a $58 value here! If you’re someone who doesn’t mind slightly less than full coverage or often pairs their lip color with a lip liner, the duo could be a nice find. The lighter shade was a bit under-pigmented (compared to how it was marketed), while the deeper shade was a bit slippery, so a liner would improve the application. Top Dupes

I CherishI Cherish is a medium peach with warmer undertones and a natural sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that glided easily across my lips but didn’t feel overly emollient while worn. There was a touch of product that sank into my deeper lip lines, but it wasn’t enough to be noticeable in person. It wore well for four and a half hours and was hydrating while worn. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$34.00/0.03 oz. - $1133.33 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to have "creamy, saturated, longwearing color with a satin finish." It's a light-medium thick formula that was typically opaque with a lightly creamy texture that glided on without tugging but did not slide around while worn. The majority of shades had a natural to satin finish, and they lasted anywhere from four to seven hours with light hydration. The best performing shades were light to dark while the lightest and deepest shades weren't quite as consistent. The lipstick can be purchased with the full packaging/applicator for $34 or as a refill-only for $22. The refill packaging is substantial enough that it is usable on its own, as there's a detachable base that the refillable cap clicks onto (with an audible click), but they are very slim--and that's not a surprise given they only contain 0.03 oz. making them one of the smaller lipsticks on the market. Slim lipsticks typically contain around 0.07 oz. of product and are usually smaller than the average standard lipstick tube (which tends to be between 0.10 and 0.12 oz.). You InspireYou Inspire is a deep burgundy with subtle, cool undertones and a barley-there micro-shimmer that ran through the more cream-like finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, but it didn’t seem to adhere as strongly nor as evenly along the inner area of my lips (most noticeable on my lower lip). The consistency was lightly emollient and felt a bit more slippery compared to other shades in the Confession range. I didn’t experience feathering or bleeding over the five and a half hours it lasted for but for someone who often experiences it (I don’t), the slip felt like it could result in that, and the formula felt moisturizing to me. via Temptalia https://ift.tt/2mWxpkT It’s probably been a month or more at this point, so I am due. I’ll likely start doing a more aggressive weed through of what I have in late October (when I’m less busy).

via Temptalia https://ift.tt/2n4bMiu Nocturnal NirvanaPat McGrath Nocturnal Nirvana Blitz Astral Eyeshadow Quad ($65.00 for 0.2 oz.) is a new, limited edition foursome that features all shimmer shades in the Blitz and Astral-based finishes in the brand’s range. These are often referred to as the “dome-shaped” shades as they tend to have more “effects” than the typical, pressed powder eyeshadows (that are flat). Under how-tos, these types of finishes are often recommended to be applied using fingertips or with wet brushes, though they aren’t always listed that way, and some shades can be used dry/as-is. If you like more pigmented, shimmery eyeshadows, they’re all quite nice–easy to work with, blendable, and long-wearing. Here’s some official details on the “domed” finishes:
I think the brand could position/describe their shades a bit better on a per-shade basis because the information often has a general take of “one-stroke, fully pigmented, opaque color saturation” and things like “pure colour intensity” but then other shades are to be built up using fingertips or a wet brush, so there can be confusion on what to expect. Sometimes they have a list of each shade and give better (clearer) details on how to use, but it doesn’t always occur. Based on experience, the more glittering a shade, the less base pigment it has, but a lot of the Blitz and Metalmorphosis shades are more pigmented than they are buildable to begin with. As is the case with most pigmented eyeshadows, you can use a lighter hand or a fluffier brush to achieve sheerer and more buildable coverage.

Incandescent Gold 003Incandescent Gold 003 is a light-medium gold with moderate, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation applied dry, with fingertip, or with a dampened brush–it was by no means a sheerer or buildable product on its face. The “how-to” recommended applying this shade with fingertips and building to desired intensity, but fingertips yielded opaque results with little effort/product. You’d have to use a very light hand and a fluffier brush to achieve more medium coverage. If you enjoy pigmented eyeshadows, you can mentally bump up the rating to an A+ (as I rate for how it’s supposed to perform–buildable pigmentation). The texture was smooth, dense without being too firmly-pressed into the pan, and blendable without fallout. It had minimal fading after nine and a half hours of wear.
Blitz AquamarineBlitz Aquamarine is a bright, light-medium blue with subtle, cool undertones and warmer, green-gold shimmer paired with a metallic finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation applied dry and opaque coverage when applied with a dry brush. The texture was fairly smooth with slight dustiness in the pan, but the product applied well to bare skin and adhered well for nine-hour wear. The brand said to build up intensity using fingertip or to apply with a dampened brush; using a fingertip yielded semi-opaque to opaque coverage and dampened brushes definitely yielded opaque coverage. I’d say that it is a bit more pigmented than the brand seems to describe–a little buildable but pretty pigmented with a dry brush, let alone with a fingertip! Top Dupes

VR EmeraldVR Emerald is a medium green with warmer, olive undertones and a bright, sparkling finish. It was described as a duochrome, and it shifted subtly to a plummy-purple at very extreme angles, but it was hard for me to detect it in person, even on my arm. The texture was soft to the touch, smooth, but slightly dustier where some of the shimmer was more easily blended/diffused away from the base, so I’d recommend using shorter, more precise strokes to blend out if you don’t want the shimmer to diffuse too far beyond where it was initially applied. It had semi-opaque pigmentation applied dry with a tendency to sheer out slightly, while applying with fingertips yielded opaque coverage that was less prone to sheering out and applying with a dampened brush yielded opaque, slightly deeper coverage with no tendency to sheer out. This shade had a “how-to” that said to press it on with fingertip to get to “desired colour intensity,” which seemed fairly consistent with my experience. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading slightly. Top Dupes

Blitz PurpleBlitz Purple is a deep purple with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had rich pigmentation applied dry or wet, and it applied surprisingly well (with intense coverage but good blendability) with a fluffier crease brush. The texture was smooth, dense, and more like a thicker cream eyeshadow in the pan; it seemed to get a bit creamier after the first use. I worried whether that would translate well during application, but it worked beautifully. The color stayed on nicely for nine and a half hours on me. This was the only shade that the brand never listed to use with fingertips in their “how-to.” Top Dupes

Now, let’s dive into readers’ most loved and most wanted products from this past week along with recently shared looks and color stories. Most LovedMost Recent LooksMost Recent Color Storiesvia Temptalia https://ift.tt/2nIh1Ei MauriceTom Ford Beauty Maurice Lips & Boys Lip Color ($36.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a rich, reddish-copper with warmer undertones and a glossy, cream finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, creamy consistency that had moderate slip and skated easily across my lips. The lipstick was lightweight, and while it was quite creamy initially, it seemed to “set” slightly so that it had a touch of tackiness for better adhesion. The color didn’t sink into my lip lines noticeably, and it stayed on well for five hours and was hydrating while worn. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$36.00/0.07 oz. - $514.29 Per Ounce The Lips & Boys Lip Color formula is not different from the full-sized Lip Color range; they offer a travel-sized version (which is actually cheaper by the ounce: $36.00/0.07 oz. or $514.29/oz. compared to the full-size at $54.00/0.10 oz. or $540.00/oz. The formula is supposed to have an "ultra-creamy texture" and "pure color" with a "balance of luminosity." The range has a fair amount of variation as the finishes differ (matte to metallic), so coverage can be medium to full with some shades applying well and others decently. The wear was anywhere from three hours to over six hours. In general, the formula has a creamy texture that's easy to work with, comfortable to wear, and is lightly to moderately hydrating. They have a vanilla scent but no discernible taste. Browse all of our Tom Ford Beauty Lips & Boys Lip Color swatches. TaylorTom Ford Beauty Taylor Lips & Boys Lip Color ($36.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a bright, medium red with neutral undertones and a natural sheen. It had a translucency to it that made it appear like a lip stain, as there was still plenty of color impact but the natural lip color came through. The coverage was medium to semi-opaque, slightly buildable beyond that point. It had an emollient consistency that glided easily across my lips without dragging, but it felt thinner (though it didn’t cling), which seemed to minimize its ability to slide around during wear, so I didn’t have any issues with feathering. It wore well for four and a half hours and left a faint stain behind but felt hydrating while worn. Top Dupes
